Information about SMC
Though based in Sunderland our membership covers a wider area.
We are mostly from the North East of England - but not exclusively so
If you’re interested in what we do, we’re interested in you
The ‘Mountaineering’ bit in our title might sound a bit scary or exclusive but most of us are just walkers and/or climbers. True we prefer mountains to muddy fields and wouldn’t take at all well to organised walking.
We are (almost) ordinary people – we even do the occasional tea room.
What we do - what we are
We walk – we don’t ramble (debatable) - We climb, we scramble, we bike
Mostly we’re interested in mountains, but you’ll also find us walking fells and moors, even the occasional muddy field
The club has a number of weekends away, mostly in the Lake District staying in BMC affiliated club accommodation or camping ~ the club has the use of a private campsite near Keswick (great for bank holidays).
We also have trips further afield, for instance Scotland and Yorkshire – mostly camping but sometimes in accommodation.
The people
I’ve been a member for a few years now and know most of the members reasonably well. For the most part their no stranger than any other group of outdoor type people
(except for the ‘characters’ of which the club has its fare share)
They are a friendly lot and did and continue to make me welcome.
We are a ‘social club’ as well as an ‘activity club’ aside from the ‘crack’ and waffle when we’re away, we also have a weekly pub night, occasional nights out and a yearly Club Dinner.
Children
All of our camping trips are suitable for families, the Keswick site is particularly popular with families on Bank Holiday weekends, but generally the hut accommodation we use is not appropriate for children and we cannot accept any children, or young people under 18 who are not accompanied by a parent or guardian who would be fully responsible for them.
Joining Sunderland Mountaineering Club
We do like to meet prospective members twice at meets prior to them becoming members
Gives us a chance to get to know one another
You may not like us – we may not like you
Our yearly membership is £18
If you do live within travelling distance of Sunderland then we meet every Tuesday at 21:30
in the Rosedene Public House, Sunderland
come and meet us
Buy us a pint maybe ?
If you’re not in travelling distance then email us – tell us a bit about yourself and we’ll get back to you
Club Dinner 2011
4 - 5 March - two nights
The Keswick Country House Hotel
Two nights Bed & Breakfast + the evening meal £110
A bit of an increase in price from the last two years
But hopefully the attractions of the fleshpot that is Keswick will compensate
and
For those not wanting to stay in the hotel Keswick has a good selection of bed & breakfast accommodation, plus a YHA (quite close to the hotel) and a independent hostel (slightly further away)
Another club dinner to look forward to
Only downside is we’ll all be another year older
But not wiser I fear
